(12-9-2016 Penang) Dato¡¯ Teh Lay Kuan, President of Society of the Disabled Persons Penang, said that with a lot of pedestrian walkways built recently by the local government for the disabled and visually impaired, it shows that the authorities concerned understand better and do look into the plight and difficulties being faced by the disabled in moving around.
She said even though other public facilities are yet to be improved such as some bus stops are still not disabled friendly, basically this type of new pedestrian walkways design is quite friendly to the wheelchair user and visually impaired disabled persons. She hoped that the authorities concerned could extend disabled friendly amenities to more areas.
Dato¡¯ Teh Lay Kuan mentioned that during her speech at the 2016 Moon Cake Party of the society last night.
MBPP Councillor Chris Lee Chn Kit said that MBPP will seriously enforce the rule so that the parking lot allocated for the disabled from being illegally occupied and to ensure the rights of the disabled is being protected.
He said that the general public can contact him at any time to report about the abuse of the illegal parking on lots allocated for the disabled.
Equal Treatment To The Disabled Athletes
¡°MBPP will also request that the amenities for new buildings to comply with the Malaysian Standard of MS 1184, for the easy movement of the disabled.¡±
Chris Lee also urged the Federal Government to give the similar treatment and emphasis to the disabled athletes being enjoyed by other athletes.
¡°A lot of people watched the Rio Olympic opening ceremony, buy did anyone watch the Rio Paralympic opening ceremony? If not because the gold medal achievement of our athlete, a lot of people may not know that Paralympic is in progress. I hope that the government could give the same exposure to the Paralympic athletes.¡±
The 1st Vice President of Gerakan Oh Toh Keong urged the Federal and State government to look into the welfare of the disabled and to upgrade the basic facilities for the disabled during their budget planning.
During the event, Dato¡¯ Teh Lay Kuan and Wong Ting Choy who is in charge of the study fund for the society presented study fund to 22 students.
Those who attended the function included MP of Jelutong YB Jeff Ooi, former MP of Bukit Bendera Dato Seri Chia Kwang Chye, former ADUN of Botanical Garden Jason Ong and State Secretary of Gerakan Heng Chee Wey.
