(Penang 17-2-2016) Due to OKU parking lots are being frequently abused by the general public, Teh Lay Kuan, president of Society of the Disabled Persons Penang, urged MBPP (Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang) to put up signboard such as ˇ°Reserved for OKU Onlyˇ± or ˇ°Abuser Will Be Finedˇ± beside OKU parking lot and OKU facilities to highlight and to caution the general public.

The weak sympathy towards the under privileged group of the society has resulted in the frequent abuse of the OKU facilities such as the OKU parking lot. Teh Lay Kuan mentioned that the measures by MBPP to paint OKU parking lot in blue color and to increase the OKU parking lot size are good.

ˇ°This would serve as a visual impact to the general public so that the OKU parking lot could be easily identified. However the abuses still happen frequently and the abuses are also quite frequent in shopping mall.ˇ±

She pointed out during the Chinese New Year Dinner Party held on Tuesday at Kompleks Masyarakat Penyayang that the number of cars in Penang has increased significantly over the years, however whenever the general public could not find a parking lot, this is used as an excuse to occupy the OKU parking lot.

ˇ°A lot of factors have caused the abuse, but I would like to urge the general public to understand better the difficulties being faced by the disabled and not to abuse the facilities allocated for them. I urge the authorities concerned to have a more strict enforcement in order to tackle those stubborn abusers.ˇ±

Apart from the local government, she also urged the shopping malls to uphold the welfare of the disabled, enhance precautionary measures to reduce the abuse of OKU parking by the general public.

She also suggested that the enforcement unit should put up warning signboards beside the OKU parking lot and other OKU facilities and to enhance enforcement.

ˇ°Else, the situation as reported earlier by the media that during the Christmas Eve, a group of disabled was stuck on the exit of a ramp blocked by a car most likely due the car driver did not able to find a parking lot would be repeated.ˇ±

YB Phee Boon Poh would request for stricter enforcement.

Chairman of Welfare, Caring Society and Environment for Penang State YB Phee Boon Poh mentioned that he has heard the plight of the disabled where he would undertake to request the unit concerned to have a stricter enforcement in dealing with the abusers.
