23-9-2012:

Mooncake Festival Party

¡¡

The Society of Disabled Persons Penang (SDPP) hold its annual event of the 2012 Mooncake Festival Party at Goh Kongsi, Penang. There were more than 100 members of SDPP, the members from other societies of disabled persons, some accompanied by their family members and

other guests attended the event. Ms Teh Lay Kuan, President of SDPP, thanked all the attended guests in making the event a successful event.

¡¡

Ms Teh mentioned that most of us are aware about the history of the people in old China who suffered a lot of hardship under the rule of the Mongol. They had used mooncake to spread the related messages across finally toppling the Mongol. She hoped that the younger generation would understand the history of celebrating the Mooncake Festival so that the festival will last as long as possible.

On current issue, she pointed out that it is a fact that the transportation system in Penang has been made more disabled friendly (example: our RAPID buses).  SDPP is very grateful for the work done by all in this aspect. However a lot is still to be done on the environment and the roads as they are still not easily accessible by the disabled especially the wheelchair bound and the blind.

She pointed out that in Penang there are still a lot of obstacles on the roads, for example, uncovered drains and potholes, uneven roads and walkways, chained-barriers, bus stops that are not disabled friendly and staircase with no ramps. Therefore SDPP would like to appeal to the state government and authorities concerned to take the necessary action to make our environment and roads more disabled friendly so as not to deprive the disabled their rights of accessibility.

She also pointed out that in the previous functions of SDPP, SDPP has been urging the private sector to have more awareness and concern about 'disabled-friendly'. Likewise SDPP also would like to urge the relevant parties again to make our government buildings and schools to be ¡®disable-friendly¡¯. SDPP had to keep on putting across these messages regularly, else the awareness may just die off naturally.
¡¡

Lastly, she said that mooncakes are normally round in shape, symbolizing reunion and completeness. Thus, the same thing goes to the disabled, who need to be united regardless of race, religion and culture to work towards a better future for ¡®all people with disabilities¡¯ by working together with the relevant parties.
