The Society of Disabled Person Penang (SDPP) has urged the Election Commission of Malaysia (ECM) to provide disabled friendly polling centers to the disabled in the coming general election so as to enable them to cast their votes easily.

The president of SDPP Teh Lay Kuan said that the disabled were not given proper attention by ECM during the last general election, resulting in situation such as the disabled had to climb the stairs at the polling center to cast their votes.

She requested ECM to make proper arrangement for the disabled such as to enable the disabled to cast their votes at the ground floor as far as possible, to provide a special lane for the disabled and to arrange for volunteers to help the disabled, whichever way that is suitable and applicable based on the situation of the respective polling center.

She made the urging during the opening ceremony of the 14th annual blood donation campaign organized by SDPP.

YB Chow Kon Yeow, the Exco member for Local Governmenr Affairs of Penang, said that he would contact ECM to understand whether ECM would be arranging a disabled friendly environment for the disabled to cast their votes.

He pointed out that if no arrangement has been made by the ECM yet, hopefully it would not be too late for him to propose to ECM to create a disabled friendly vote casting environment for the disabled. He would also try to arrange transportation for the disabled in order to send them to the polling centers.

The blood donation campaign was organized by SDPP, the Penang Branch of Buddha¡¯s Light International Association, Youth Branch of Un Khuay Hoay Kuan, Bodhi Heart Sanctuary and Chinese Recreation Club Penang in conjunction with the International Day for The Disabled which falls on the 3rd, December every year. All the donated blood was handed over to Penang General Hospital.
