12-9-2010:

Mooncake Festival Party

¡¡

Society of Disabled Person Penang (SDPP) organized its annual event, Year 2010 Mooncake Festival Party at the Goh Kongsi (Ean Leng Tong).

Those who attended the party included of the current Exco members and state assembly men, the past Exco members and state assembly men, the Committee Members

of Goh Kongsi, the sponsors, members of the Society of Disabled Persons Penang (SDPP) and family members, guests, helpers and members of the press.

The guests and members of the Society of Disabled Persons Penang (SDPP) enjoyed mooncake, a good buffet dinner, carrying lantern (for young family members), etc., overall having a pleasant evening.

The President of SDPP, Madam Teh Lay Kuan appealed to the relevant authorities to improve on the accessibilities for the disabled.  This is because some of the walkways and disabled-friendly buildings in Penang have been erected with the ¡°barricade barrier structures¡± by the owners or person in charge to prevent motorcycles from entering or for their own convenience sake. Incidentally, those ¡°barricade barrier structures¡± have unfortunately became a hindrance to the disabled because they are not wheelchair-friendly, thus making those ¡®wheelchair bound¡¯ difficult to enter the said building or premises.

YB Phee Boon Poh, Penang State EXCO Member, pointed that the state government is very concerned about the ¡°barricade barrier structures¡± at the walkways. Action would be taken against those who have violated the law based on complaint made.

YB Phee Boon Poh at the same time urged those who have achieved 60 years old to register before 31st of September so that they could receive the coming 100 ringgit senior citizen welfare aid. He disclosed that there are still about 23000 senior citizens who have not registered for the aid.

¡¡

YB Jason Ong urged the state government to set up a special fund for the disabled, something similar to the senior citizen welfare aid, to provide a 100 ringgit welfare aid to every one of the disabled, at the same time to give allowance to those unemployed disabled, until they can find a job.

YB Jason Ong also urged the state and the federal government to set up disabled civil servant quota by employing a fixed number of the disabled in the government departments.
